If you were at class on Thursday, then you might recall me saying we would not have a Thursday class this week. However, the reason for this cancellation has evaporated. So we can cancel that cancellation. The group classes this week are:
After this week, we start a new cycle in group classes: Salsa, Cha cha, Rock and roll, and slow Foxtrot. If you have not been going to group classes and waiting for the best time to jump in, then this is it. Also, if you know someone who has been wanting to learn to dance, then the 4 week intro offer is ideal for them. So share this link - https://www.destinedance.com.au/intro-4weeks.html. Dance event this Saturday
Remember that we have the 80s dance and trivia event this Saturday at the Carnegie Dutch Club. Details here - www.facebook.com/events/1515711269233680. Let me know if you are coming, if you have not already, so I can book a table for us all. It will be a chance to dance some, Jive, Lindy Hop, Rock and Roll, and Blues - maybe even some Cha cha. It was a fun time last time so should be this time too. Do you know people wanting to learn to dance? If you know anyone who is thinking about learning to dance, then let them know about our next 4 week program that starts on 30 October. You can share this link with them - https://www.destinedance.com.au/intro-4weeks.html Group classes This is the last week of the current cycle:
And then on the 30th, when we start the next cycle, we will teach:
See you on the dance floor Clint First off, group classes this week:
A new cycle will start in a few weeks (30 October). We will then be teaching:
But the week before that (23 October), we will teach some specifics styles: Son, Cha cha, Charleston and social Foxtrot. The reason for this, so we can cover some dances suited to the 1920s styles likely to be danced at the Gatsby party on the 28th of October. If you want to dress up and dance to classic live big band music, then make sure you get your ticket - https://www.trybooking.com/events/landing/1091741. And mention Destine Dance when asked if you are with a group so we will all be on the same table. But before then, we can return to the Carnegie Dutch Club for a night with Blush - https://www.facebook.com/events/1515711269233680. We have been to one of their nights before. Dancing, trivia and fun times. We had a good time then, so I expect we will have a good time at the next night as well. Let me know if you will join me - so I know what size table to book. See you on the dance floor Clint First off, a reminder about the group classes this week:
This Saturday a group of us from Destine Dance will be going to a Bachata event - www.facebook.com/events/842317153919160 The last time was fun so if you want to come along again, then let me know - just so we have a sense of numbers. This is a major event so it should be even more fun. Finally, the EOY will finish up late December. The plan was to finish up mid December, but due to a few unforeseen issues, we have had to delay things. Therefore, the final awards night for 2023 will be on 21 December 2023. This will also be the last event for the year so put this in your calendar now. On top of that, because December has so much going on, there might be a number of lessons we will not run as usual. Be ready for some crazy times. See you on the dance floor Clint Last week was quite a week. We had the awards night on Wednesday - which was one of the most successful based on the grades people earned. And we had the photo shoot on Thursday night - which was certainly a positive experience for those who like to be in front of the camera (I am sure that we will learn about when the images are posted and I will let you know when that happens).
This week we still have some action. First off, the group classes:
Note that there is no class on Wednesday. This is due to the venue on being available. If you normally have a private on this night, then you might want to go to the other group classes to keep up the dance practice. Also, let me know if this causes an issue for your subscription. Wednesday night might be a major part of the classes you usually do. I can make adjustments to compensate. It has been a while since we have had a social event. Thus, it is good news that the Party Animals will be performing at the venue this Sunday - https://www.facebook.com/events/323156846781013. Let me know if you are going - I will add you to our table. It will be a chance to dance jive, blues, Lindy Hop, R'n'R, and maybe some cha cha. Also, remember the Gatsby party in October - https://www.lifesaball.com.au/events/vip-save-the-date/. This will be a chance to dress up in 1920s style and dance to a live big band - not something that happens often. When you book, mention Destine Dance when asked to note the group you are with. That way we will all be on the same table. Thus far, it is me and a number of women. I will do my best to dance with all of them, but I am still just one man. It would be good to have more men come along - spread the word to men you know who would like to join me at a table with a number of women. There has also been, as those who have been to the group classes know, more women than men of late. So if you are a man who has not been to group classes of late, then come by this week - and the next and the next and the next. See you on the dance floor Clint As mentioned last week (and shared in the group) we have now organised for a group booking at the Gatsby Night in October. It's going to be a great night of music, dressing up in 1920's style (a bit better than the 2020's style to be honest), and dance.
You can book your ticket here - https://www.lifesaball.com.au/events/vip-save-the-date/. When you do, you will be asked if you are part of a group. Type "Destine Dance" and you will be part of the group booking. There's already 4 of us booked so join in. By the time of this event, we would have done some Jive, Lindy Hop, Cha cha, waltz and slow Foxtrot in group class. These are dances likely suited to the night so you well be well prepared. Speaking of group class: • Monday 7:30pm Street Latin - Merengue (a fun and sexy dance that is easy to learn) • Tuesday 6:30pm Latin American - Samba (a fun dance expressing the energy of carnival) • Wednesday 7:30pm Swing and R'n'R - Blues (practically by definition, the coolest of all the dances) • Thursday 6:30pm Ballroom - Standard tango (the ballroom dance that once dominated the world) This is week 5 so stick at it to enjoy what you have learned thus far. Soon we will be doing: • Kizomba • Jive • West Coast Swing • Waltz So if you are looking to jump in when the next cycle starts, then get ready. If you are not getting to all the group classes, then get your teacher to go over dances for the Gatsby night in your private lessons. But after you have prepared for the awards. I have emailed people about the details so make sure you got the email if you are going for an awards. Speaking of the awards. If you are not going for an award, but want to attend, then you can secure your ticket here - https://www.destinedance.com.au/store/p38/Sep2023Awards.html. $15 to support others, get a dance lesson and get some pizza. The bar will also be open - so a good night. Things will finish by 7:30pm in time for group class. See you on the dance floor Clint First things first, the group classes this week:
Disco was good on Saturday night. We were able to utilise a number of styles taught: cha cha, Lindy Hop, r'n'r and even some merengue (which went better than some expected!). This is what these socail events are about - using what you learn. So now let's consider some 20s swing. Save the date for this event - https://www.lifesaball.com.au/events/vip-save-the-date/. I will soon come back to you with details on how to secure your space on a table we book, but for now, just make sure you can make this night. And make sure you know what you will wear. Finally, we have the awards coming up. I have sent emails to those going for awards so double check you have the email and your recorded details are correct. If you are not going for awards, then save that date - 6 Sep 2023 - there will be the awards, dance, pizza and the bar will be open with excellent prices. See you on the dance floor Fist off, the group lessons this week:
Awards The awards are around 4 weeks away - 6th of September. I will be organising to have the bar open and get in pizza. I will soon set up a way to book in advance, but for now, save the date. Things will kick off of 5:30pm and we will still have group class that night. If you are going for your awards, then your teacher will be talking to you about it this week. If you are not going for the awards, then it is fun to watch, it is a chance to support fellow students, and we also include dances for guests as well. Not to mention again the pizza and bar. Disco time It's been a while since the last disco event at the studio, but it was a great night. The music is good and you can dance swing, Latin and rock and roll to the music. So make sure you can make it to the next one this Saturday night - https://www.facebook.com/events/768122354924501. Let me know by Friday if you want to come. See you on the dance floor Clint I am sure you have not thought too much about this, but it turns out that you probably are a romantic.
Why do I say that? I recently came across some research by Williams and Kleinke reported in 1993. They found that if someone was a romantic – they believed in love at first sight, that love conquers all, and things like that – then, after having physical contact with someone new, they would want to continue working with that person. Not to say they were in love with them, but that they would be keen to keep working with them. People who were not romantics would rather not have physical contact with people they did not know in the first place. The fact that you keep coming back to dance lessons to work with another person(s) in close physical contact to improve your dance ability, means you are likely a romantic. Along with the rest of us! Welcome to the club. Speaking of the “club”, group classes this week:
Also, this Saturday, I will be going to a bachata (and street Latin social dance – with a lesson). You can read more about it here - https://www.facebook.com/events/6258650760849123. It is not as close as the usual places we go, but a few students have been wanting to go to a street Latin event. And Bachata ConeXion does do a good job. I will be there so you will know at least one person there. It will also be interesting to see what the street Latin scene is like and what it is like to go to an event where everyone has specialised in one dance for an extended period. So come along if you are keen to experience this. Also, let me know if you are interested, but still unsure, and have some questions. See you on the dance floor Clint There are a few items to talk about this week.
Group classes As you likely recall - it's the new cycle in group class. The dances this time are:
Tina Turner Tribute This Saturday at the Dutch Club the Motown Band will be honouring Tina Turner. It will be a good night, like all the nights we have been to at the Dutch Club. Let me know if you will come so we can organize a table. You can see more details here - https://www.facebook.com/events/967893071000997. Burn the Floor You might have heard of Burn the Floor. It is a ballroom dance company that infuses other styles into ballroom. They have a show on at the moment at the Palms - https://www.ticketmaster.com.au/artist/803589#about. If you would like to come along with a group from Destine Dance, then join the conversation in the Facebook group (www.facebook.com/groups/DestineDance/posts/2172376036301661) so we can get organized this week - for this Sunday. Awards The next awards are on Sep 6. Save the date - we will make a night out of it for everyone - even if you are not going for an award. The awards are ideal for ensuring progressions as well - nothing like a deadline to get you focused so you learn faster. Talk to your private teacher if you have not yet locked in what you will be going for. See you on the dance floor Clint |
