- Are you looking for fun and social way to lose weight?
- Have you tried gym memberships and found you lack to motivation to go there or to work out once there?
- Do you need a trainer to keep you focused, but don’t want to pay the extra cost?
- Do you find all the other approaches to fitness are too full on, and create an atmosphere you don’t like?
If you have answered yes to any of the above, then regular dance classes at Destine Dance are for you. And we have an offer in place for exactly that.
What do you need to do to lose weight and stay fit? Let’s take a look at what medical research says:
- You need at least 150 minutes of aerobic exercise a week. So if you can do 4 hours (that’s 240 minutes a week), then you are doing even better.
- That same research says you need to exercise each major muscle group at least twice a week. Once again, if you do 4 hours a week, then that’s much better.
So all you need to do is find something that can keep you active in the right way for 4 hours a week, and you have your exercise needs covered.
Why are dance fitness workout classes ideal for this?
Let’s go over this now:
- Burning calories – according to Nutristrategy, ballroom dancing can burn from around 200 to 500 calories in an hour (depending up style and you weight). That’s comparable to aerobics.
- To dance well you need to maintain your posture and control your movement. Both upper and lower body. That means you are exercising the muscles in your entire body each time you dance – and yes; your dance teacher will get you to do this. This has the added benefit of better posture and movement in general – you also look better!
So you can see, dance is indeed an excellent approach to use to lose weight and keep it off, and to work on fitness in general.
But it offers even more again. Partner dance, ballroom dance – whatever you want to call it, is also called social dancing. That’s because it is indeed social. It’s certainly not uncommon for people to form WhatsApp groups in dance classes to meet up at other times. It certainly isn’t uncommon for romance to develop in such places – it’s practically one of the purposes of social dance. That means you now have a truly social event to attend. And that makes it so much easier to attend, than say a gym or bootcamp. And that means that as well as feeling better physically, you will feel better in all those ways that come from being social. You might think the physical and social benefits alone make partner dancing an excellent proposition. And you would be thinking it’s ideal for you right now. But there is even more. |
Partner dancing is also excellent for your neurological health.
A great summary of research into the mental benefits of partner dance has found that dance offers a 76% effective protection against dementia. Better than physical activity and more than twice as good as reading. But it needs to be a certain type of dance. The type where you need to think as you do it – as opposed to doing the same routine each time – and the type where you need to be alert – the type where there are other people you need to be aware of. In other words – social dance.
That’s the type of dance you will learn at Destine Dance.
So as well as being social and getting fit (mentally and physically), you can also lose weight.
Just by coming to dance lessons 4 times a week.
Now the questions you are likely asking are:
You can attend a group class whenever you want. These classes spend 30 minutes covering basics – so if you are a beginner, then all good. Then 30 minutes dancing what you have just learned – that’s where it can get even more social.
If you want to get start, then just come to the next class. You can see the schedule on the home page.

- What if I want to get better at dance first? You can always try our private lessons if you want to get some skill under your belt first. You can also book these any time latter on as well.
- What if I feel nervous in crowds? For one reason or another, dancers are typically really nice people. You will find that as far as crowds go, we have a really good one.
- What if I am not comfortable with close contact? Some people actually take dance lessons to get over this. However, it is worth noting that all contact in partner dancing is for practical reasons – so the dance is easier. This limits the discomfort some feel with such contact.
- Can I use these skills in other places? Absolutely. While we focus on fun lessons, we also do our best to be authentic. That means you will also have a new social skills you use at weddings and other events.
