Not many know about blues dance. Even though many of us know about the music. One of the most common statements we hear from students when they first dance the blues is 'I didn't even know that there was a dance called blues.' This is despite its long history that includes prohibition and the swing period.
Once students dance blues, they often find that blues is one of their favourites. We have almost all grown up with music influenced by the blues and know the blues. That's why once you dance to the blues, there is an instant connection with the music and an appreciation of the dance. Because the word 'cool' came from the same culture that gave us the blues, the dance is the epitome of what it is to be cool, and a contrast to swing dances.
