I am sure you have not thought too much about this, but it turns out that you probably are a romantic.
Why do I say that? I recently came across some research by Williams and Kleinke reported in 1993. They found that if someone was a romantic – they believed in love at first sight, that love conquers all, and things like that – then, after having physical contact with someone new, they would want to continue working with that person. Not to say they were in love with them, but that they would be keen to keep working with them. People who were not romantics would rather not have physical contact with people they did not know in the first place. The fact that you keep coming back to dance lessons to work with another person(s) in close physical contact to improve your dance ability, means you are likely a romantic. Along with the rest of us! Welcome to the club. Speaking of the “club”, group classes this week:
Also, this Saturday, I will be going to a bachata (and street Latin social dance – with a lesson). You can read more about it here - https://www.facebook.com/events/6258650760849123. It is not as close as the usual places we go, but a few students have been wanting to go to a street Latin event. And Bachata ConeXion does do a good job. I will be there so you will know at least one person there. It will also be interesting to see what the street Latin scene is like and what it is like to go to an event where everyone has specialised in one dance for an extended period. So come along if you are keen to experience this. Also, let me know if you are interested, but still unsure, and have some questions. See you on the dance floor Clint

There are a few items to talk about this week.
Group classes As you likely recall - it's the new cycle in group class. The dances this time are:
Tina Turner Tribute This Saturday at the Dutch Club the Motown Band will be honouring Tina Turner. It will be a good night, like all the nights we have been to at the Dutch Club. Let me know if you will come so we can organize a table. You can see more details here - https://www.facebook.com/events/967893071000997. Burn the Floor You might have heard of Burn the Floor. It is a ballroom dance company that infuses other styles into ballroom. They have a show on at the moment at the Palms - https://www.ticketmaster.com.au/artist/803589#about. If you would like to come along with a group from Destine Dance, then join the conversation in the Facebook group (www.facebook.com/groups/DestineDance/posts/2172376036301661) so we can get organized this week - for this Sunday. Awards The next awards are on Sep 6. Save the date - we will make a night out of it for everyone - even if you are not going for an award. The awards are ideal for ensuring progressions as well - nothing like a deadline to get you focused so you learn faster. Talk to your private teacher if you have not yet locked in what you will be going for. See you on the dance floor Clint I hope you have been having a good time in class of late and at the socials we’ve been to. Certainly the Saturday night event was fun. It was a great band, great songs to dance to, and a great group of us who went.
It was also the first outing for a couple of our students. It’s always a big milestone when students can say words to the effect of “last night we went out dancing.” And that is the point of Destine Dance. It is to help you and others learn dance so you can enjoy it the way it was originally meant to be enjoyed – as a fun way of being social with other people. That’s why it is also called ‘social dancing’. Once you can use dance as a social tool, you are in that happy place where you simply keep on getting better so you can enjoy it more and more. Private classes are easily the best way to get to that point fastest. And they allow you other avenues of enjoyment – like a sense of achievement and a chance to perform through awards. But group lessons are still excellent for the social side. So next time you are in a group lesson, remember two things:
That means you need to find that balance between a focus on yourself and a focus on your partners to get ideal cooperation. Cooperation that allows everyone to learn for betterment and experience the social aspect. Both of which are essential to good partner dance. So when you are in the next group class, think about being social and working with your partner so you can both be better dancers. If you have been going to group classes of late, then you likely know that this week is the last week of the current cycle. That means this is the week you get to enjoy most what you have learned in these styles:
Next week we start a new cycle:
If you have been looking to jump into a cycle, then lock in next week. And if you have been with us for the current cycle, then you know this is a chance to learn another group of dances so you can dance them socially as well – and simply improve your overall dance ability. See you on the dance floor Clint First off, let's talk about group classes.
This week is the 5th week of the current cycle. We will be doing:
Now let's talk socials. There are two events on this weekend, but at class this week we decided one should get primary attention. Therefore, I will guarantee that I will be heading off to this event on the Saturday: https://www.facebook.com/events/1241473833161635. There is also an event on the Sunday, that I might go to, but would encourage you to go to if you wish to scratch that dance itch: https://www.facebook.com/events/1206093833403924. Finally, I want your ideas. I was contacted by the local member about government grants in the creative space for organisations like Destine Dance. The basic information is here - https://creative.vic.gov.au/funding-opportunities/find-a-funding-opportunity/creative-ventures-program. I have talked to the staff about ideas, but I am also keen to hear from you. If you have any idea on the kinds of things that could be done in dance, then let me know your thoughts. Please also share this link with others who you think might benefit from it. See you on the dance floor Clint Thanks to everyone who took the time to fill out the survey last week.
The main concern raised this time was about ensuring everyone gets fair access to the facilities - music and mirrors basically. I have reminded the teachers to ensure that they use and share these so that you get fullest benefit. By all means let them know if you feel you are missing out. Another item was that some felt they had not progressed as fast as they would like. This is common, but I am thinking about creating an online course on attributes of dance to help people develop the key capabilities outside of class. This should help people speed up their progress. In the interim though, I can reiterate the value of doing a diversity of lessons. This week we had a couple who had been doing only privates and were amazed at the benefits of their first group class. And, we also had a couple who had been doing only group classes and were amazed at the benefits of their first private class. And remember, there is no substitute for showing up. You can see the group classes we are doing this week listed on the studio homepage - https://www.destinedance.com.au Note this is week 4 of the current cycle so stick with it if you have been going to the other classes - now is the time we really solidify your capability and start having fun.
