Scott Everard
Scott’s first exposure to dance came from his Argentinian neighbours. Whenever there was a party at their house, his family was invited. He saw that dance was as important to the party as eating, drinking and saying hello. He took that party vibe and spread it to his friends at house parties and night clubs as a young man and learned different street dances such as Popping. In 2004 when he was 19 years old, one of his clubbing friends asked him to come to a Swing dancing lesson with her because of his love of Jazz music. He hasn’t stopped learning partner dances since then.
His knowledge of dance styles ranges across too many to name, partnered and solo. Social dances are his favourite but he also competes regularly in Lindy Hop and Blues at a national level as well as dabbling in West Coast Swing, Modern Ballroom, Latin American and Modern Jive to name a few. He has danced corporately for 8 years appearing on television as well as performing live for different promotional events such as the St Kilda Festival, White Night and the Glenn Miller Orchestra’s Melbourne show just to name a few. Because of his experience in swing, Scott runs the Wednesday Swing Blues and R'n'R class.
Dancing has taken Scott all around Australia and the world. Whether it is learning Kizomba in Vancouver, Lindy Hop in Canberra or Blues in San Francisco he always looks to learn from the best dancers in the world - not just to learn dance techniques but also to explore their teaching methods. Teaching dance is his true passion and Scott feels that sharing his experience as well as inspiring others to dance is what makes him truly happy. The joy in his dancing is contagious and he would love to share it with you.
QnA with Scott
What do you like most about dance?
Versatility. Dance is physical, creative, social, tactile, musical, emotional. It’s an art form as well as a life skill.
What do you like about teaching dance?
Everything. I want to pass down the tradition of it to future dancers so that they may love it too.
What's your favourite quote about dance and why?
“What I am bringing forth in them is the tradition and evolution of dance.” – Welcome to the Ballroom
The fun part about dance isn’t an accident. Moments after music was invented people couldn’t help but move in time to it and dance was born. You can’t help nodding your head to your favourite song because it is part of our human evolution. Dances that we teach to students are traditions which have evolved throughout history and are what dancers have found to be the best way to feel the music we listen to. As the world changes, so does music and so does dance. Tradition and evolution are of equal importance. They give us our place in the history of dance itself.
Why did you start dancing?
I started dancing lessons because I was diagnosed with Epilepsy and alcohol was something I had to give up because of it. I had nothing to do at parties and I still wanted to have a good time. I thought it looked really cool and I tried it and loved it immediately.
If you were tell people just one thing about dance, then what would it be?
Try it. You’ll discover new things about yourself and a new world you couldn’t comprehend existing without trying it.
Why do you like partner dance more than other types of dance?
Dance is the physical embodiment of music. Dancing on my own is like playing guitar on my own. With a partner, it is a different thing. Suddenly my movement and expression becomes our movement and expression. It’s like playing music on my own versus playing in a band.
