You are thinking about learning to dance, but you now want to know how it all works. This page will take you through the process so you understand how Destine Dance is set up to teach you to dance.
The levels
The first thing that is probably good to know about is the level system that has been established in partner dance. This system has been around for quite a while, but it also evolves.

The first thing that is probably good to know about is the level system that has been established in partner dance. This system has been around for quite a while, but it also evolves.
The levels taught at Destine Dance are:
- Proficiency: This level focuses on a collection common dances (8 in total) and covers the basics of each. You will be able to say you can dance. This level is only pass fail.
- Bronze: This teaches two dances from each group of dances (see what we teach for a list of dances) and gives you greater competency.
- Bronze elite: This teaches another two dances from each group of dances to takes your competency further. You can dance in social situations with confidence.
- Silver: You dance 4 dances from each group developing a more polished style. You will feel you are a better looking dancer capable of more improvisation and more figures.
- Gold: One more dance is added to the group and you are now working on doing more of a performance than simply dancing socially. There is also the chance to do levels beyond this. You might want to make a vide production out of this, which we can help with.
How you achieve each level
To pass a level, you will learn a routine made of figures that are of that level. Once you learn the routine, you will be ready to perform that routine in front of an Adjudicator from the Australian Dancing Society. By performing in front of an independent adjudicator you get third party feedback and true verification on your dance ability.

Benefits of completing the levels in this system
The system was set up around 100 years ago. The goal was that it allowed a student to have clear goals to achieve so they feel confident they are capable and ready to dance in society. Therefore, one of the greatest benefits is feeling confident in your dance ability.
As well as being established, the system is global. That means you now can dance with people in other parts of the world. It is a little like language - they might have an accent, but you understand them. This is an excellent for travel. No matter where you go in the world, you can find a local dance community or event and join in. That means you connect with the locals (not the tourist company employees) for a more genuine interaction. Knowing dance in this commonised manner opens many doors for more interactions with others.
A sense of achievement is also gained. For each level you gain a certificate and a trophy. You might put them on display or you might put them in a box. But you always feel good knowing you have them.
More efficient learning. When you do not have a goal, you can plateau. This system gives you focus, and you make the most of each lesson. You then experience faster and more efficient growth as a student.

Is achieving each level enough?
The system and levels provides many benefits when becoming a better dancer. However, it is important to regularly apply what you have learned in a social context. That is why Destine Dance will regularly organise social events that you can attend and dance at. Usually with a live band and a bar so it is truly social, relaxed and fun. No better way to enjoy what you have learned - and improve even more again.

How long does it take?
It is no surprise to be told it varies from person to person. However, we often have people ready for their proficiency in 2 dances within 6 weeks.
You could then expect to do an award every 3 months. This assumes private lessons.
However, you can take the time you need. Especially if you do group classes.
You might also choose to focus on some groups of dance or you might like to do them all. Some people have preferences and some people simply want to learn everything.

Getting started
That's what this page is all about so let's talk about it.
If you want to get good, then privates are the way to go. This is especially so for men. The fact is, as a lead, you need to get good fast so you can lead a partner.
The best way to try us out is with a risk free lesson. Take a look at the Deluxe and Intermediate intro packs here. In the first lesson you get to experience what it is like dancing with your own instructor. If you like it, then you have started your journey to become a dancer. If you find it is not for you for any reason, then we simply go separate ways and you have only spent an hour trying out something new.
If you are looking for something more cost effective, then check out our intensity intro offering. You can try all our group classes for 4 weeks at a huge discount.

How much commitment is needed?
It's always better to practice as much as you can and be ready to learn when you arrive. That means:
It's always better to practice as much as you can and be ready to learn when you arrive. That means:
- Practice a little at home each day - 5 minutes a day is better than half an hour a week
- Go over figures in your head when you can - mental rehearsal helps more than many realise
- Go to as many classes as you can - when you do privates you can attend all group classes, going to these will see you improve a lot
- Be able to get there relaxed - we are located in Brighton, but close to Elsternwick, Elwood, St Kilda and other places in Bayside, as long as you can get to us easily you will be in a learning state when you arrive
Yes! I want to learn to dance.
