Szidonia Szabo
Szidonia was 17 when she went to her first dance class using her saved allowance. Ten years in she was representing Hungary in Latin show dance in China on the world championships. While most of her experience is in Latin competitive dances, she enjoys all dance. To better herself she complemented her training with ballet and contemporary fundamentals. She also loves trying new styles to broaden her repertoire, like burlesque or pole. She has now moved to Melbourne, after a period of travel. She keeps dancing a major focus in her life and she wants to share her passion with as many people as possible.
QnA with Szidonia
What got you started in dance?
Not sure to be honest, but I always wanted to. However, my parents never had the money to support me. I was 17, just a year ahead of university, when I concluded that I have saved up enough to buy a pass in a local dance school.
What do you like most about dance?
I feel freedom, art when dancing. Practising is a great part of becoming a good dancer, there I feel achievement.
What's most challenging about dance?
Dancing is a way of expression and stress relief since humanity exist. When my students come to realise that they can do this too and simply enjoy, that’s a great win.
What do you think most people do not know about dance but should know?
Apart from feeding your soul, it keeps you extremely fit. If you’re like me, and don’t enjoy going to the gym, but want to stay healthy, toned and fit, you have an amazing alternative.
What's your favourite quote about dance and why?
“If you mess up the choreography, mess it up with confidence, no-one will know!” Might be silly, but that’s the only thing that comes to my mind. Quoting my teacher and dance partner here. Dancing built my confidence significantly, changed me for the better.
