QnA with Jei
What got you started in dance?
When I was 14 my best friend Brenda went to a 50s and 60s rock'n'roll class in Hamilton NZ to try it out. I didn't go, but I decided that if she wanted me to go with her the next week that I'd give it a go. Lo and behold, she enjoyed the class and did ask me to join her, and the rest is history! I have loved dancing ever since!
What do you like most about dance?
I love the freedom of expression, and the ability to interpret what I hear in the music in a way that is individual to me and how my body moves. I love that dancing helps to connect your body and your mind with the world around you, and that you use all of your senses to engage in this beautiful synergistic form of movement.
What's most challenging about dance?
The biggest challenge is finding time to go dancing and do all the different styles! There just aren't enough days in the week to fit in Rock'n'Roll, West Coast Swing, Salsa, Bachata, Argentine Tango and every other style I love so much.
What advice do you have for students?
Allow yourself to make mistakes because they are really mistakes so much as just a different expression of movement, and celebrate every achievement no matter how big or small.
What's your favourite quote about dance and why?
Basics are only basic until you add technique, style, and flair! We often focus on learning harder and more complex moves, but I can show you how to take a simple step and move it so that you can express your own individuality within the dances framework to both look and feel like a master of the art of dance.
